The Artist's Body (Themes and Movements)
Published in Hardcover by Phaidon Press Inc. (June, 2000)
Authors: Tracey Warr, Survey Amelia Jones, Amelia Jones, and Tracy Warr
Average review score:

great thematic survey
This is like a catalog for an exhibition that could never be mounted (at least not with the actual works). It is a collection of documents of various performance artists whose works deal with the human body as both the subject and object of their art. The book divides the works into various categories and creates some very interesting and surprising comparisons. By grouping such 'painterly' aritists as Gunter Brus, Paul McCarthy and Karen Finley, the authors present new avenues of interpretation for each. The captions function in much the same way as wall labels for a gallery show would and encourage the reader to think about the complex meanings of works that are not often discussed beyond their sensational surface. The introductory essay is good but it is the captions, photographs and the artist statements at the end where the real action takes place. The book also includes works by sculptors and photographers whose works are performative in nature. I was happy to see that Brazilian artist Lygia Clark is included. Her imaginative and playful objects are often overlooked because their gentle qualities are usually overshadowed by the more sexually explicit works of other artists.

The Atlas of European Mammals (A Volume in the Poyser Natural History Series)
Published in Hardcover by Academic Press (July, 1999)
Authors: A. J. Mitchell-Jones, G. Amori, W. Bogdanowicz, B. Krystufek, P. Reijnders, A. Mitchell-Jones, B. Kry¿ tufek, F. Spitzenberger, M. Stubbe, and J. Thissen

Everyday use of the Atlas
There are 194 mammal species living in Europe. Some of them are common, widespread and well known, but others are rare and mysterious. What makes the Atlas especially valuable is that it gives accounts on all of them. Equally. I personally use it either to find out what species could be expected in a given geographical region (going on vacation somewhere?), or I seek what species of a given higher taxonomic unit occur in Europe and finally, one can find detailed information on distribution border line of the species of interest. The maps of the Atlas are its best features. On the other side, the text possess small mistakes in some places. But finding information on species is usually not as difficult as finding thorough details on its distribution. I rank this book as high as I could.

The Auks: Alcidae (Bird Families of the World)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (May, 1998)
Authors: Anthony J. Gaston, Ian L. Jones, and Ian Lewington
Average review score:

A ¿must have¿ for serious seabird enthusiasts.
A fascinating account of the biology of the world's auks (or alcids). Full of valuable nuggets of information, much coming from years of field research by the authors. The text is rich in useful maps, line drawings and tables of facts and figures. The color plates by Ian Lewington are up to his usual very high standard and show all living species in the majority of plumage states. I found the discussion of the evolution and radiation of both extant and extinct species particularly interesting. The high price and limited treatment of field identification may put off many birdwatchers, however those who read the book will be surprised at how interesting the auks really are.

Australian Tarot Deck (Granny Jones)
Published in Hardcover by Kangaroo Press (August, 1995)
Author: Revecca Jones
Average review score:

pictures say a thousand words!
The Granny Jones tarot deck is wonderful. The cards are so easy to read. There are key words on the cards, as well as the book to help the first time user, but the art work is so simple and descriptive they aren't necessary. Everyone who has seen my deck loves it, unfortunately, even in the designers home state the deck is hard to come by. Simplicity may be the key to her cards attractiveness, and perhaps the explanations such as why a big hairy spider and the man tied to a post is The Devil card just make sense.Whimsical, delightful and anything but incomprehensible. (A shared love of cats helps)

The Autobiography of Leroi Jones
Published in Paperback by Lawrence Hill & Co (March, 1995)
Author: Amiri Baraka
Average review score:

frankness, humor, self-examination ....
Autobiographies, even by poets, rarely reach the depths of honest self-examination one finds in their poems. One has only to think of Kenneth Rexroth's tall stories or William Carlos Williams' evasions.

But Mr. Baraka's is different. His has been a journey from a middle class background in Newark (keeping in mind that it was not a white middle class), through Howard University's elitist social structure, the racism of the Air Force; his beginnings as a poet & his drift into Charles Olson's powerful gravity. Many of America's best white poets were among his friends & he did much to promote their careers along with his own. Then his turn toward leadership of the great Black Awakening of the Sixties, his move "uptown," his embrace of socialism & subsequent return to Newark where he continues to influence young writers & activists of all colors & ethnic backgrounds.

There are also his controversial plays, his feuds, marriages & arrests. Also his witnessing of the Newark Rebellion (the full deadly story never accurately reported in the press), his deep understanding of American culture & respect for authentic expression.

That's a lot to cover, but Baraka does so with frankness, humor, self-examination & an occasional willingness to admit error without loading up on pointless regrets.

A fine account of a fallible man who, even in his most angry moments, gives the world beautiful things. & that anger is usually over our failure to see the beauty of justice.

The Autobiography of Mother Jones
Published in Paperback by Charles H Kerr Pub Co (February, 1990)
Average review score:

Mother Jones on: Mother Jones
A very imformative book about one of the greatest women in history. I am not usually a fan of history, or autobiographies but this is a clear exception. The story of Mother Jones has become an american folk legend and has been twisted and altered by all sides. So the time comes to get it straight from the source. Mother Jones tells her own story in a straight forward, yet moving manner. My favorite part is a particularly heart-wrenching chapter on child labor. Where Mother Jones works in the mills along side young children haggard and overworked at age where nowadays they would barley be in school. The book is composed of numerous unique stories divided neatly into chapters which makes for easy reading, but it is very difficult to just stop at the end of a chapter. You'll find yourself making excuses simply to continue reading this wonderful and motivating tale from the one and only, Mother Jones.
